I stopped saying "toxic masculinity." The phrase attaches the rot to the noun — tells a boy his masculinity is the raw material the poison comes from. It isn't. Cruelty is genderless; toxicity is the right word. Masculinity, done well, is something else entirely — and worth naming too.
