Distrust isn’t discernment

And I often wonder if conspiracy theories are actually comforting to people, because the idea that there is no plan, might be far worse.
There are plenty of good reasons to be suspicious of powerful people and institutions. But there’s a difference between questioning what you’re told and deciding that whatever you’re told must be a lie. The second one can feel like critical thinking without requiring much thinking at all.
I also keep coming back to the entertainment part. Are we trying to understand what happened, or are we hoping the next detail makes the story more interesting?
